11th TALLINN PRINT TRIENNIAL
11th Tallinn Print Triennial takes place from
September 18th to October 18th, 1998 and will be one of the most important international
art events in Estonia.
1st Tallinn Print Triennial was
established in 1968 by Estonian artists with the support of Latvians and Lithuanians as a
counterbalance to the Moscow-dominated official art life where monumental art, sculpture
and painting had the leading role. Prints which are easily multiplied and distributed
became an important medium for the innovative artistic ideas and alternative relations.
2nd Tallinn Print Triennial 1971 - artists from
Moscow, Leningrad and Minsk participated as guests.
8th Tallinn Print Triennial 1989
- international for the first time. Artists from Leningrad, Finland, Poland, Canada and
Hungary participated in addition to artists from the Baltic States.
11th Tallinn Print Triennial is a programme of
exhibitions and events which poses the question of the heroic tradition of prints not so
much from a craft aspect but from a technological aspect. It could even be said that it
deals with a kind of memory technology in the context of other media technologies.
11th TALLINN PRINT TRIENNIAL has as its key word TOUCH, which provides broad
opportunities for interpretation for the intersecting combinations of key words:

Regulations:
11th Tallinn Print Triennial will present original works made between 1995 and 1998
(incl.) and produced in any reproductive printmaking technique (drawings and monotypes are
not accepted), up to 4 prints from each selected artist. The works must be signed by the
artist.
The organizers anticipate that most works should be maximum paper size 70 x 100 cm. The
organizers will however frame larger works or very large works could remain unframed. 3
dimensional works will also be welcomed, provided that a printing technique has been used.
Written proposals for new 3-dimensional works may also be submitted. These should be
accompanied by sketches and 2 slides or photos of former works.
The selection of works consists of two phases:
Phase A - Slides
Artists should send slides of the up to 4 works they would like to present at the
Triennial. The slides must be of good quality so that they can be used for publishing a
catalogue. 35 mm slides should be sent in 5 x 5 cm mounts on which should be written the
name of the artist, country, the title of the work, year and the number of the slide.
Additional information about the works - technique, year, dimensions (both: print size and
paper size - height and length in cm) etc. should be included on the entry form
(photocopies will be accepted).
Deadline: The slides must be received by the Organizing Committee not later than
March 2nd, 1998.
A Special Jury of the Organizing Committee selects the artists from Phase A for Phase B
- to participate at the 11th Tallinn Print Triennial.
Slides of the works not selected for Phase B are returned if so indicated on the entry
form.
Phase B - selected artists
Artists selected for Phase B should send their works (at their own cost) together with
completed entry form to the below mentioned address between June 8th and 25th, 1998.
Prints have to meet the regulations of the Triennial and must be sent unframed and without
passe-partout. Signing the entry form means that the artist accepts the regulations.
If the works do not arrive in time, the artist can not take part in the Triennial.
If any damage is found on receipt of the prints, the artist will be notified at once.
3-dimensional works should be packed in such a way that the organizers can return them
in the same packing. Any assembly instructions should be sent with the work.
Participation fee:
Phase A - is free of charge.
Phase B - selected artists (except from Latvia and Lithuania) should send a proof of a
bank remittance in the amount of $15 (European countries) and $25 (artists from
non-European countries) to cover prints return charges, to the following bank account:
Eesti Vabagraafikute Ühendus (Association of Estonian Printmakers)
HANSAPANK code 767
Liivalaia 8, EE0100 Tallinn, Estonia
Account No. 221010214953 S.W.I.F.T code HABA EE2X
Remittance costs should be covered by the artists. Prints that are sent to the
Triennial without correctly filled in entry forms or without bank remittance will not be
accepted.
Prizes:
An international jury will determine the winners of all prizes. GRAND PRIX, three
equal prizes and several purchase prizes (e.g Tallinn City Prize and the Prize of the Art
Museum of Estonia) will be given. All prize works will become the property of local public
entities sponsoring such awards, GRAND PRIX and the three equal prize works will go to the
possession of the Tallinn Print Triennials art collection. The winner of Grand Prix
will be invited to participate in a special exhibition at the 12th Tallinn Print
Triennial.
TANGENTS - curated exhibition in the Tallinn Art Hall which attempts to define
the boundaries of prints, to identify the tangents and marginalia which, even though they
themselves remain outside the boundaries of prints, nevertheless create meanings for it.
Here methods can vary from the most ephemeral techniques of reproduction to video and
digital technology.
REINCARNATION - BOOK - just as a print has by now abandoned its true home, the
book, and hangs on wall, so the book seeks a place for itself as an independent object.
The process can be described as the deconstruction of one medium. This is a curated
exhibition and takes place in the Gallery of the Tallinn Art Hall.
REINCARNATION - PAPER - curated exhibition in the City Gallery, Tallinn.
LAUREATES - Rotermanns Salt Storage Arts Centre
CONFERENCE - the theme uses the key words of the general conception of the
Triennial as its starting point.
Catalogue:
The organizers will publish a colored catalogue of the Triennial. Every participating
artist will receive a copy of the catalogue free of charge.
Other information:
The works will be returned within 6 months after the closing of the exhibition.
Prints can also be for sale if so indicated on the entry form. The price should be in
USD. There will be a commission on sales.
The organizers reserve the right to photograph or otherwise reproduce the works for the
purpose of publicising and recording the Triennial.
While all precautions will be taken in the handling of the works, the organizers assume
no responsibility for any damage to the prints as the result of events beyond their
control or during transportation. If artists need more protection, they should make
arrangements with their own insurance agency.
Entry forms with slides (deadline: March 2nd, 1998), entry forms with prints (deadline:
