For more than twenty six-years, as a practising artist, Joseph Winkelman
has pursued his fascination for the special qualities of atmosphere, unique to the British
landscape. He has found etching and engraving to be the perfect vehicle for this purpose.
Joe’s work contains a quality of quiet drama, capturing
ordinary scenes during moments of unusual light at different times of day or season. His
ideas are gained through drawing - he finds this process distils images in his mind. Only
later does he recreate the spirit of the idea on copper or with the grain of wood, as only
possible with printmaking.
Joe was born in Keokuk, Iowa, in 1941. He studied at the University of
the South at Sewanee where he took a BA in English in 1964. After finishing his degree he
did two years' service with the Peace Corps teaching secondary school in Tanzania. On his
return to the US, he attended the Wharton School of Finance at the University of
Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. His career as an artist did not begin until 1968, when he
abandoned business studies and travelled to England to study Fine Art at the Ruskin School
of Drawing in the University of Oxford.
After completing formal studies in 1971, he set up a studio in his residence in
Charlbury where he painted and began to experiment with relief prints, gradually
progressing into intaglio printmaking. In 1982 he moved his family and studio back into
the city of Oxford where he continues to live.
He taught at Oxford University and Oxford Polytechnic. Then in 1989 he
was elected the seventh President of the oldest society of printmakers in the world, the
Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, founded in 1880 by Sir Seymour Haden. During his
term of office (1989-95) Joe successfully enhanced the reputation of the RE bringing the
art of printmaking to a wider public throughout the UK. He also encouraged the election of
the finest printmakers from Eastern Europe and North America.
Joe exhibits regularly at home and abroad and his work is
included in a number of public collections in Britain, America, and Russia.
Joe is happy to entertain visits to his studio by individuals and small
groups by appointment. The studio is located at the rear of the Hermitage in the
Conservation Area of Old Headington in the city of Oxford.
