A century of European prints
Linked
exhibitions in London, UK
From mid-September to mid-October,
six leading galleries in the West End will host a
festival of prints. The century will be divided into
three periods: 1890- 1935: The Fine Art Society in
collaboration with Frederick Mulder; 1925- 1970:
Mercury Gallery, Lumley Cazalet and William Weston
Gallery; 1960-1997: Marlborough Graphics and Alan
Cristea Gallery. There is some overlap and some
artists, those spanning a long period, will be
represented in more than one exhibition.
This will be an unusual opportunity
for the many changes, schools and technical
developments to be seen at one time. From the early
period, which was largely monochromatic, we can see
the gradual development of the use of colour. We will
also see scale changing dramatically and ideas about
what constitutes a print and its materials becoming
less rigid.
It will also demonstrate that
Londons leading dealers foster a high degree of
scholarship and knowledge about prints of this
period. Print collectors will be surfeited with
treasures and first-time buyers will have an
unparalleled introduction to a seductive art form
within their reach. Teachers and students will be
able to study 100 years of volatile change in this
ever-evolving medium.
