The California Society of
Printmakers will exhibit prints by over 150 artists
at the Academy's 551 Sutter Street Gallery, March 2 -
March 27, with a reception March 5, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
In 1913, in preparation for the
upcoming Panama-Pacific International Exposition a
group of artist joined together to form what is now
the longest running society of printmakers in the
United States. From its inception the society has
been at the forefront of the art of printmaking. In
March an exhibition on the 85th anniversary of the
founding of the society offers a chance to see the
contemporary state of printmaking. More than a
hundred and fifty artists from the California Society
of Printmakers, both local as well as national and
international, will be exhibiting original prints
ranging from intricate mezzotints to large format
monotypes. The prints on exhibit range from the most
recent techniques in the printmaker's art to more
traditional techniques. Mezzotint, woodcut, etching
and lithography are all on display as well as
computer generated prints, body pressings, monotypes
and photo-generated prints. An 85th Anniversary
Catalogue of the California Society of Printmakers
will be available at the gallery.
